Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of a little girl. Her aunt worked in the evening shift as a nurse, so she could indulge her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay discovered through experience the art of being a good tool for activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially aware from her mother. DuVernay was brought up in Compton with her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family was for many generations. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama to help inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. In 1990, she completed her studies at the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood CA. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of broadcast journalism. Her first job was as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the task of watching the residence and scrutinizing the garbage belonging to one of the juries. In the course of her tasks, she became dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicity specialist in a small production studio right out of school. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Besides PR, the agency established several lifestyle platforms including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
